Hello,
Welcome and thanks for your query.
There are a number of factors required for weight reduction and a low calorie diet is only one of them. Calorie requirement is calculated based on height, weight and activity. From the calculated calorie need, you need to reduce the daily calorie intake by 1000 calories and then you can lose 1 kg of weight per day. Along with calories, GI of the foods you eat are important. A low GI diet leads to weight loss where as a high GI diet leads to weight gain.
Next comes exercise. You should do moderate exercise for minimum of 30 minutes a day.
Stress management is also very important.
If these are not giving adequate results, you may need medicines in the group of GLP1 agonists.
As for cholesterol abnormality, I need to know your lipid profile to decide whether you require medicines in addition to the above.
Do get back to me with your height, weight, occupation and other activities and your lipid profile.
If you have not tested your Thyroid function, that also has to be tested and corrected if abnormal.

Thank you for the thoughtful reply. My total cholesterol is 270 with 65 hdl 132 triglycerides and 170 ldl. I just had a physical and my dr did not want to put me on statins yet. He wanted to wait 6 months, and asked me to lose weight and eat healthy but did not really give me anything more specific. He mentioned my “ratio” being 4.1 to 1 was not alarming and wanted to see if we could get the numbers on track naturally without statins.
I’m 64 years old, male, 6’1” and 235 lbs. I’m a big guy that looks and feels very good at 200 Lbs. This is the first time in my life I’ve ever had elevated cholesterol and it confuses me although it doesn’t seem to concern my dr. At least in the near term. But I want to get out in front of it and get the weight down and I’m frustrated with my inability to do so.
I hope this response answered your questions.

I am a realtor and would describe my activity level as moderate. Blood pressure is very good. I have had two afib episodes in 7 years so I take sotalol 80 mgs twice a day but no blood thinner. It seems to be well under control with two short episodes that resolved without intervention. I don’t drink frequently but when I do I tend to over do it so I realize I need to stop that.

Welcome back and sorry for the delay in replying.
On a quick calculation, your average daily calorie requirement is about 2,200.
If you reduce 500 calories then you can lose about 1 pound per week.
Eating low GI foods will also reduce the fat accumulation in the body and help you lose weight.
If you take Orlistat, it would help reduce fat absorption and help you lose weight and may be helpful in reducing your cholesterol levels also. You may discuss this with your doctor. It may interfere with absorption of fat soluble vitamins and that may need to be taken care of.
There are other medicines in the GLP1 agonist group which are helpful in reducing weight and may be beneficial for the heart also.
