Question: two weeks ago I was involved in a horse riding accident. Actually two accidents the same day. (Not a good day) 1rst i was bucked off a friends horse. Landed in soft dirt on my right side. knocked the wind out of me. painful to take breaths for a little while. Two hours later during a obstacle challenge I was walking my horse up a narrow hill to cross a bridge. She refused to cross the bridge and started backing up fast.. Her hind leg slipped of the side of the hill and she fell on my lower right leg with her legs headed up hill. She rocked back and forth on my leg 3-4 times trying to get off of me. I was able to walk away however I felt pain behind my knee. My jeans were not torn. I was competing out of town and was taken to a local urgent care. The pain behind my knee was a huge gash that took 25+ stitches to sew up. The urgent care thinks it was the pressure of my horses weight that broke the skin be hind my knee. I think so also since there were no rocks on the trail and my jeans were not torn. They told me to follow up with my dr. My dr. has drawn fluid out of my calf 5 times. The last time was yesterday. I went to see him to have the stitches removed. While waiting the nurse noticed fluid dripping from my leg. It was coming out of the wound. He drew out 200 cc's of fluid after removing the stiches. The fluid looks like blood but a little lighter in color. He wrapped my leg and taped guaze on the wound. Said if the wound started oozing fluid to call him. I slept good last night. Nothing oozing from the wound. But the wrap is feeling tight and my foot and calf very swollen again. Its been 2 weeks today since the accident. Why is my calf still filling with fluid. also my right side is still very tended from and back to front of my side. Is that where my kidneys are located? very concerned.

Brief Answer:
Can be due to infection or internal injury.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
The collection of fluid in the calf is suggestive of an internal bleeding or hematoma formation. The fluid can collect due to an infection in the area also. Any bleeding disorder or infection needs to be ruled out after proper investigations. MRI scan will help in detecting any internal injury.
The tenderness on the right side can be related to a muscle strain or a soft tissue injury in the area. It is the area of the kidney. An ultrasound scan can help in ruling out an internal injury.
I hope this answers your query.

I am quite positively there is internal injury causing the fluid build up. My horse weighs 1000 lb's. She rocked back and forth in my leg 3 - 4 times. Like I said I have had fluid drawn 5 times. Averaging approximately 85 cc's each time. I dont think there is an infection as the fluid withdrawn does not smell bad. Something inside is continuing to bleed now for two weeks. Is wrapping my leg suppose to stop the bleeding? How long can an internal injuring continue to bleed before permanent damage occurs.

Brief Answer:
Infection can cause a damage.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
Internal injury or a blunt injury on the soft tissue can cause the tissue to be damaged and ooze out fluid. This invites infections and if it gets infected then it can cause a permanent damage. The fluid needs to be dried up for the healing to happen. Wrapping the leg in a compression bandage can help in decreasing the oozing of fluid and can help in healing. You can get a culture sensitivity test of the fluid done to rule out an infection.
Hope my answer is helpful.
