Question: we are trying to decide what kind of doctor my husband needs to go to. he has pain in his upper thigh. He has had an mri and he does have some arthritis. but this is like keeping him away and night kind of pain. Always hurts more when not being used, is weak but not painful when walking around during the day. He has fallen twice when it just "gave out". He has had a procedure on each leg to open collapsed veins but his leg circulation now is perfect. He has had pain in previous years hence the atheritis diagnosis and vein procedure but none of this is helping the pain is getting much worse. The 2 times he has fallen where in the last 2 weeks.

Brief Answer:
Consult with spine surgeon as may be due to peripheral neuropathy.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

I have gone through your query and here is my advice.

As per your history, he has pain mainly during night, so I think it may be due to peripheral neuropathy.

The cause for peripheral neuropathy may be nerve compression at lumbar region as he had history of fall also.

For further assessment I would suggest you to consult with expert spine surgeon for detailed clinical examination. He may procure MRI back with whole spine screening, nerve conduction studies, few basic blood investigations blood sugar level, vitamin B12 level as per evaluation.

Meanwhile for pain you can take tablet motrin. Apply diclofenac gel or ointment locally. Heating pads may also help. You may require regular physical therapy after consultation.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

I did include the fact that he has had an MRI and arthritis was the only thing diagnosed by the MRI.

You have not been a help to me.

Brief Answer:
kindly consult with spine surgeon...

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thank you for your reply.

As per history, I think it may be due to peripheral neuropathy(as having pain during night) for which nerve compression due to arthritis or lumbar disc compression(as having history of fall) may be the causes.

For that I was specifically concerned about MRI back with whole spine screening after consultation.

If you had already done MRI back and if there is no disc compression, than he may require other few investigations nerve conduction studies, blood sugar level, vit. B12 level to rule out any other possible causes after spine surgeon consultation.

Hope I have answered your query.
Let me know if I can assist you further....
