Yes.......Gastritis(APD) and heart burn may cause discomfort in chest and breathlessness in addition to retching,acid reflux,burping,indigestion,pain abdomen,pain in back,cough,trouble swallowing and gassy feeling.
Abdominal bloating can affect the diaphragm,which is a structure that separates chest and abdomen,the two cavities.
It is made of smooth muscles which are involuntary.
When diaphragm goes down (relax),there is negative pressure in chest and we breath in.
When diaphragm goes up (contract),there is positive pressure in chest and lungs are squeezed so we breath out.
Bloating can affect diaphragm and this leads to shortness of breath.
Patient takes short and rapid breaths which can lead to swallowing air (Aerophagia) which further worsens bloating.
At times,due to bloating and reflux of stomach acid,there is regurgitation in lungs which cause an added shortness of breath and even pneumonia.
Kindly do certain life style and dietary modifications to get rid of bloating and acid peptic disease.
1.Eat small and frequent meals instead of large 3 major.
2.Avoid overeating.
3.Take an early dinner.
4.Avoid fatty,greasy,spicy and junk food meals
5.Avoid alcohol and tobacco.
6.Abstain from tea and coffee.
7.Be physically active.Do exercise daily.
8.Take a good 8 hour sleep in night.
9.Sleep at a slight angle with the head elevated(35 degrees)
10Avoid Carbonated beverages
11Avoid Chocolate.
12Avoid citrus fruits and garlic.
13 Take Probiotic supplements.
14Increase the intake of curd and other natural probiotics.
15.Avoid gassy foods like beans.
Identify the food substrates which you are not able to digest and which triggers the bloating and avoid those stuffs.
16.Avoid constipation and have a rich fiber diet.
17.Keep yourself well hydrated.
18.De stress yourself.Learn relaxation techniques and meditation.
Stress can trigger and accentuate bloating and other symptoms of acid reflux hence de stress yourself.Do yoga and meditation.
19.Eat slowly,avoid swallowing air.
20.Take commercially available Digestive Enzyme Supplements.
You can also take a drug of PPI group,Pantoprazole which helps to decrease acid production and bloating.
You can start it once a day,before meals.
Antacid like Sucralfate are alkaline in pH and form a coating on the gastric mucosa thus saving it from the acid attack.
To my patients I also start Pro kinetics like Levosulpiride which helps the stomach to empty faster and relieve bloating.
