What Can I Do To Reduce All This Pain I Fell And Injured My Ham String?
Question: Hi, doctor. About 2 weeks ago I fell and injured my ham string to the point of barely able to put weight on left leg due to pain. The orthopedist dispensed some meds - anti inflammatory and Flexeril and also suggested physical therapy. When I asked if it was too soon for that, she said no, sooner the better. Bad mistake. I went for PT the other day and inflammation on hamstring is 10 times worse and also, the whole leg now feels inflammed with cramping and pins and needles spasms. (Therapist did exercises and some electrodes on leg) All made it much worse. Question is - what can I do to reduce all this pain and is this a normal response to PT? Thanks so much.

Hi there
Thanks for the query
Usually hamstring injuries need about 6 to 8 weeks of fresh to before you can item physiotherapy.
It appears that you have gone to physiotherapy quite soon.
I would recommend that you get an ultrasound scan to make sure that you have done your hamstring and nothing else important around your knee.
Apply ice and keep the limb elevated for relief.
I hope I have answered your query.
I will be available to answer your follow up queries.
Thanking you.

Doctor, thank u for your answer. Since the pain is really bad where I can barely put weight on injured leg, is there any kind of injection that my orthopedic surgeon could give me to alleviate some of this hamstring injury pain? I will go for MRI as u suggest, just wondering since the anti inflammatory does little to nothing, would there be any kind of injection or is this an injury that just needs to heal with time. Thank u so much.

You may take codeine or tramadol tablets if the pain is a lot.
Keeping the limb elevated and applying ice does wonders for pain relief. Avoid doing those movements or activities that cause pain.
You may receive Diclofenac injection or Morphine injection for pain relief.
I hope I have answered your query.

Hi, doctor. Just one follow up question. Ortho surgeon feels this is a bad hamstring injury yet most of the pain (especially with walking) is coming from the front - especially sharp pain in groin. Is this normal and approx how long would this take to heal?

To know if it is a bad hamstring injury it is best to get an MRI scan to confirm.
Yes you can have a hamstring injury at the groin or just above the knee.
Most hamstring injuries heal on their own.
It can take about 6 to 8 weeks for the pain to settle down and heal.

Hi, doctor and thank u for all your good advice and will be asking my orthopedic surgeon for MRI scripts in a day or so. Just a quick follow up question. This injury happened approx 2 weeks ago and seems to feel worse rather than better despite good home care and also has radiated from that upper hamstring/groin area to leg and hip. Are flare ups and pain migrating to other areas common with this type of injury?

It’s likely that the limb is not rested and because of movements the injury may feel worse due to less chance for it to heal.
Keep limb elevated and ice it. A hinged knee brace will help.
