First of all I like to communicate that dermatophagia is a form of disorder where the person bites own skin out of compulsion. The person knows what is wrong or right but fails to control the compulsion of biting own skin. I mean to say that the act of biting skin is not pleasurable but repeated over and over leading to damage to skin.

Accoring to current understanding of science, dermatophagia is considered a form of obsessive compulsive disorder and can be managed in similar fashion. The treatment involves use of SSRI group of medications. For example I often need 20-60 mg of fluoxetine or 100-200 mg of fluvoxamine or 100-300 mg of sertraline among others. Although none of these medications can cure this disorder but tremendously helpful in majority of patients to control this disorder.
