Montelukast, also known by its brand name Singulair, is a medication called a leukotriene receptor antagonist. It works by stopping a chemical that activates the immune system, especially the part of the immune system that causes ashthma and allergic rhinitis.
It can be used for these conditions as well as for some itchy skin conditions called urticaria. It typically comes as a 10mg tablet that is taken once a day, or a 4 mg packet or chewable tablet for children.
