Would a pineal cyst have the same symptoms as a lacunar infarction? I have scans that show both but know way of tell which happened first or when any of them happened. But it does say they are old . I was trying to determine what might have caused a hemiparesis with muscle atrophy. My left side is two sizes smaller than my right and has supination. I also had meningitis.

Brief Answer:
pineal cyst and lacunar infarct does not show up the same symptoms in all cases

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome for follow up.

* The pineal cyst does not produce same symptoms as of lacunar infarct, the later case
is always associated with an acute injury to certain brain areas with complete occlusion of
blood supply and permanent damage.

Though there are exceptions always, the above possibility is more likely.

* When scans showing both, secondary development of pineal cyst after the lacunar
infarct sounds higher possibility when you had no previous symptoms in many cases.
The development of cyst co-relate with the physiologic response of the body to fill the
space via fluid collection.

Hope this information will help you to better understand the issue.
Regards.

could the cyst or infarct be caused by Hydrocephalus ? I had meningitis when I was an infant. Also on more recent CT it showed ischemic small vessel changes.

Brief Answer:

Detailed Answer:
Hello

* Usually hydrocephalus does not give rise to cyst formation as the area of hydrocephalus
is not restricted to particular small area as of pineal cyst.
Infarct can be possible sequence of hydrocephalus from compression at various level of
blood supply to particular brain regions.

Thanks.
