Detailed Answer:
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and I understand your concern.
Some people have problems digesting whey protein and experience symptoms such as bloating, gas, stomach cramps and diarrhea.
But most of these side effects are related to lactose intolerance. Lactose is the main carb in whey protein.
It is not clear in your description if you have that symptom when you have egg alone, or only when you have the egg together with the protein shake?
I would suggest that you consider doing a food tolerance test so you can see if that is the case that you are intolerant from lactose or any other component that connects all these type of shakes.
The red blood from the stool means that it comes from the last part from the bowel and not from the stomach. So most probably the HCL pepsin will not be very helpful.
The red blood in the stool sometimes indicate hemorrhoids. In this case you would have irritatation and pain on the anal area when you have a bowel movement. Let me know if this is the case.
I hope this is helpful. I look forward to your follow up question, so with the extra information in your history I will be able to assist you as needed.

1. Dont have any irritation, pain and or any feel hemaroids near anal area
2. blood will stop if i discontinue protein shakes. Eating only eggs or yogurt has no issues. Its observed only during protein shakes. I have revalidated this few times with different types and brands protein shakes. Since i am vegetarian, i am finding challenge to get adequate protein nutrients and concerned about it.
please advise.
The intolerance test is not in the report
Detailed Answer:
Hello again,
Thank you for the follow up question and the extra information.
The report you have attached does not include the intolerance test. There are a lot of other tests, which I see are within normal limits but not the intolerance test.
I think you have the answer of your problem though. It lies into one of the components of the protein shakes that is common between all of them. And I have the impression is lactose, but can also be any of those components in the shakes. I am sorry I do not have an easier answer as to say your treatment is to avoid using those shakes.
Maybe if you do the intolerance test in the future and what causes the problem is not lactose, but one of the other stuff that is there, then you find a shake that had as less as possible additives.
I hope this is helpful. Let me know if you have other questions or concerns.
Regards,
Dr. Papaqako
