11 Year Old, Painful Urination, Burning Sensation While Going To Chlorine Pool. Remedy?

My 11 year old son has extremely painful urination and burning sensation whenever he goes into a chlorine pool. We have now seen three Urologists who all said that he is sensitive to Chlorine. He isn t just sensitive, he is screaming hysterically after he urinates after leaving the pool. What could be the possible cause of this? I am desperate for any even temporary remedy so that he won t forego swimming in pools forever.

Hi,

Thank you for your query.

Your son can be screaming for either of the two following reasons:
1. The uretheral opening at the penile tip may be affected which may be hurting your son when he urinates.
2. The urine composition may be causing the burning sensation.
I will appreciate if you share the urine report so that we can guide you further. I hope the doctors must have examined the uretheral opening for any abrasion or wound. In case it has been missed then kindly get it examined.

I hope I have answered your query to your satisfaction.

Wishing your son all the best.

Pediatrician Dr. E Venkata Ramana's  Response
Hi,

Thank you for your query on Healthcare Magic.

It seems the child is developing chemical urethritis due to the exposure of chlorinated water.

The best option is to use protective underwear which will prevent the contact with water.

Ask him to drink plenty of water.

Complete urine examination will rule out the other causes of burning urination such as urinary tract infection.

Hope I have answered your query.

Regards.
