Hi,I am Dr. Santosh Kondekar (Pediatrician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi Brother,
Your 2 yr old child has taken Thyroxine Sodium tablets 50 mcg by mistake. Usually with this very low dosage no complication will arise. If you check the thyroid level, temporarily it may show an increase in level T3 and T4.
Fact: There is no relationship between the serum T4 and T3 concentrations and any symptoms or signs of hyperthyroidism. Children who accidentally ingest even large amounts of thyroid hormone may have very high serum thyroid hormone concentrations, but rarely have any symptoms of hyperthyroidism.
So no need for any treatment other than observation. If you are still worried a gastric wash may be useful (Not absolutely indicated)
Don't worry.
Best wishes
Hi and thank for the query,
Taking the tablet only once should not cause a big panic. She might experience some passing symptoms like mild increased body temperature, cause some diarrhoea, increased heart rate. Considering the fact it was taken only once, it should not really be a call for concern now.
I suggest you just give him a lot of water and fluids to drink. Watch the child carefully and in case you notice any thing abnormally serious, you might have to consult your primary care physician. If not, be calm and give the child much water and fluids.
thanks and best regards,
Luchuo, MD.

2 Year Baby, Mistakenly Taken Thyroxine Sodium Tablets 50. Guidance?
Hi Jagadeesh, Thank you for your query on Healthcare Magic. How many tablets he has consumed? Consumption of thyroxine tablets leads to irritability, vomitings, increased heart rate, and loose stools, and dehydration. I advise you to consult emergency as early as possible if the child is irritable and restless. If the child is normal, look for danger signs and consult once your pediatrician for physical examination. Hope I have answered your query. Regards.
