2 Year Old, Diarrhoea, Vomiting, Mucus In Stools, Fever. Medical Attention Required?

My 2 yr old daughter has had diarrhea on and off for about a week. Today she started vomiting , diahhrea all day that is clay colored and full of mucus . She has also developed a fever this evening. Wondering if I should just continue to monitor her and push fluids or take her to the Dr. Right away, it s Friday evening so it would have to be the ER.....

Hi

Your kid has Gastroenteritis, which is infection of the gut, most commonly viral.

Till you see your doctor you can do the following things.
- For fever, give Acetaminophen syrup in a dose of 15 mg/kg/ dose, repeated every 6 hours.
- For vomiting, give her Domperidone syrup in a dose of 0.3mg/ kg/ dose, repeated every 8 hrs.
- Loose stools will not stop immediately. As you already know you have to take care of her fluid intake
Give her plenty of fluids- rice based porridge/ vegetable soups/ plain water/ ORS
Give her lot of curd in addition as it has probiotic bacteria naturally and very good for diarrhea.
Avoid fruit juices/ cow`s milk temporarily.
- Be sure that she passes urine atleast 4 to 5 times in a 12 hr period.

If at any point of time, she becomes tired/ drowsy or her oral intake is very poor or her urine output is very less, do not hesitate to take her to ER.

Hope my answer helps you.
Wish a speedy recovery for your kid.
