2 Year Old, Fever, Red Swollen Gums, Blisters On Lips. Prescribed Maalox, Pain Reliever. Cure?

2yr old daughter had a fever for the past 4-5 days which just started to get better and has red swollen gums , some blood in her mouth and swollen lips that appear to have small blisters (not sure if it s a cold sore or not). She isn t eating at all...drinking some. Went to the doctor and he said to mix Maalox and pain reliever and rub on her lips. What could she have? Is that the best advic or should I take her back?

Hello
From the kind of lesions you have described it seems that it is fever blister also known as cold blister or herpes labialis.
In most of the cases it subsides on its own and only conservative treatment is needed. Maalox is an antacid and usually used to treat gastric ulcer.

You can use ultracare or other oral anesthetic gel over the lesion. Also use antiviral ointment thrice a day as this prevents the spread of virus. Give multivitamin supplement as it helps in early healing of the lesions. If pain is severe you can give her acetaminophen ( tylenol).
