3 Weeks Old, Umbilicus Gets Wet, Is Deep. Why Is It Wet Still ?

My baby is 3 weeks old. Her umbilical stump fell off when she was 2 weeks old and since then her umbilicus started to get wet. I also notice that her umbilicus is deep, when I try to push the surrounding area to see if there is more discharges to come out, but fortunately, there s nothing. I use alcohol in cleaning it. Why is it still wet? Is alcohol not enough and I need to use other better solution or any ointment? And why is it too deep?

Hi,

The discharge and wetness of the umbilicus in your baby is due to local infections caused by bacteria.

Some times granuloma at the umbilicus may lead to discharge.

Keep the umbilical area dry and clean.

If the discharge is due to granuloma, it needs treatment by the application of common salt crystals or copper sulfate crystals locally after taking the advise of your Pediatrician and after his examination.

Bacterial infections of the umbilicus should be treated promptly by applying antibacterial ointments and oral antibiotics if required.

So consult your Pediatrician for the examination and for the appropriate treatment.

It could be Umbilical Granuloma or Surgically Correctable cause of discharge. Further assessment can only be done after examining. Kindly consult Pediatric Surgeon.
