3 Year Old, Vomits On Drinking Milk, Watery Stools, Bloating. Lactose Intolerance?

Hello, My 3 year old daughter has been drinking cows milk for almost 2 years now. A few days earlier my daughter vomits whenever she drinks milk, now she has watery stools whenever she drinks her milk, she has a bloated tummy and is irritable. She is not vomiting anymore. All her symptoms go away if she doesn t drink milk. Is this a sign that she is lactose intolerant? And what can I give her as a substitute for her milk? She is not a very good eater.

Dear Katie

It could fit with lactose intolerance. Sometimes, there can be transient lactose intolerance following recovery from an episode of Gastroenteritis.

In this situation, there is very sore bottom with redness along with other symptoms you've mentioned. You've clearly mentioned that symptoms go away if you avoid milk.

There are lactose-free milk powder/substitutes available in supermarkets/your GP can prescribe. Continue giving her weaning foods/semisolids what she likes to give her adequate nutrition. Yoghurts are very helpful during diarrhoeal illness.

However, it is very important, even if you decide to try lactose-free milk - to try normal cow's milk after a period of 4-6 weeks and see if the symptoms return back.

I hope I've been able to answer your query

Regards

Hi

Anyone can develop secondary lactose intolerance after an episode of gut infection. This will be temporary.
So stop milk for few days till she is completely alright.
But a 3 yr old should get a nutritious food and milk should be restricted to 2 glasses per day.
During this diarrheal episode, give her curd(yoghurt), soups, mashed potato, rice based food items, cooked dal etc. Curd is very good as it has probiotic bacteria naturally additional to the nutrients of milk too.
You may give her soyamilk too.
Hope you find my answer helpful.
