4 Year Daughter, Large Patch On Tongue, Painful While Brushing And Eating. What Could Be This?

I have a four year old daughter with a large white patch on the lateral portion of her tongue. It is almost scab like. I can't recall a traumatic event in which she bit it. I thought it was a canker sore at first but it seems to have doubled in size over the past few days. She only complains about it when we brush her teeth and the brush bumps against the area in question. I also have noticed that it seems to bother her when she is eating too, like it is sore while moving the food in her mouth during chewing. This white substance does not wipe off. Any guesses?

Pediatrician 's  Response
Hi,

Thank you for your query on Healthcare Magic.

This type of lesions on tongue is seen in the flowing conditions.

1.Trauma due to self bite

2.Glossitis due to vitamin B complex deficiency

3.Oral candida

I advise you to apply an oral gel containing benzocaine 10 minutes before eating so that the pain wont be there.

Multivitamin supplementation will correct the nutritional deficiency and cures glossitis.

If it is due to fungal infection such as candida, it requires an local application of antifungal agent.

So consult the pediatrician for physical examination and for treatment.

Hope I have answered your query.

Regards.
