4 Year Old Kid Having High Fever And Skin Rash. What Should Be Done?

I have a 4 yr old grandson who has been running high fever 103 and above for more than a week. His fever broke today and he now has a rash mainly on the trunk of his body. Was this caused by the fever and should we just watch him and see if it goes away?

Hi there,

Thank you for choosing healthcaremagic.

By the description you gave, your grandson most likely is suffering from roseola which starts with high fever and the fever breaks when a rash appears.

This illness particularly is harmless and just needs symptomatic treatment like treating it with fever reducing agents like acetaminophen, and keeping him hydrated. After the fever disappears, the rash usually lasts for 1-3 days.

Although this particular illness is typically harmless, I would suggest you take him to his pediatrician if his rash is persistent especially since I don't have the visual image of his rash, if the fever is still present or comes back or is high, if he is not drinking well or if he is not acting his normal self.

Hope this helps.

Best wishes.
Regards,
Dr. Sumeet.
