5 Year Kid, Itchy Private Area, Bumps Red In Color. What Could Be This?

Hi, my 5 yr old son has been scratching his private area for about 2 weeks. He says it's very itchy. Now he has bumps and it's red. I appled desitin ointment which helped dry the bumps out and i out baby powder after and it seems to help. I just don't know why he is so itchy down there. Now he has some bumps on his stomach going up to his left armpit.

dear user
itching in private area nowa days usually occurs because of humidity , poor hygiene . all these areas including armpits are common sites of such type of problem .
1. you should clean all these areas with proper soap and water .
2. keep these areas completely dry .
3. can apply some smoothening lotion.
4 . can apply medicated sweat absorbing powder.
5 . these are usually itching so can give anti allergic medication like cetirizine .
as 2.5 mg bd . two times in a day .
before starting medication kindly consult to your physician

Hello dear,

The case history as mentioned in your post suggests that your child might be having fungal infection in the groin area.
Presence of bumps on stomach going up to armpit suggests the spread of the infection.

Management includes:
1. Keeping the area dry & avoid too much exposure to water or sweat formation.
2. Antihistamine preparations like cetirizine to provide symptomatic relief.
3. Application of topical antifungal cream to tackle the causative organism.
4. Topical antibiotics can also be applied to prevent secondary bacterial infections.

If symptoms still persist or aggravate further, then it will be better to consult a Dermatologist & get a proper examination done to find out the actual cause.
So that appropriate management steps could be taken.

Also make sure your child is not wearing tight clothes...as it will cause sweating & aggravate the infections.

Pediatrician Dr. Himanshi Kashyap's  Response
Hi,

Itchiness in the anal area at nights are associated with worm infestation and hence regular deworming should be done.If the itchiness is present throughout the day then there is a possibility that its due to allergy , dermatitis or fungal infection.

The skin lesions starting from the stomach going towards armpits needs to be examined closely .Hence i would suggest that you get him examined by his doctor.

Regards
