52 Year Old Going Through Menopause With High Cholesterol Levels. Need Treatment?
my blood pressure is always perfect if not slightly low. M I have the pulse of an athlete equivalent to my age or better. I am a 52 years old female, just hitting menopause and my total cholesterol has hit 9. But because my HDL is high it brings my risk factor back down to 3.5. Should I be overly concerned by the high cholesterol level?
Hi
Thanks for writing in. I am a qualified and certified cardiologist. I read your mail with diligence. In a lady of your age you have one non modifiable (being a lady above 45 years of age) and one modifiable risk factor that is high cholesterol levels. It is good that HDL is high so you are partly protected. Please get back with values of other lipoproteins, and get yourself screened for other risk factors those are 1. Diabetes 2. Smoking 3 Obesity with sedentary life style 4. Stress. You do not have high blood pressure and your HDL is high are factors countering the risk posed by two factors you have. After assessing the complete profile a treatment can be suggested. Regards.
With Best Wishes
