6 Year Old Taking Deep Breaths, Feeling A Knot In The Chest. What Would It Be?

Hi I m a bit concerned about my nearly 6 year old son... Can t get a doctors app until next week and as it s not an emergancy I m not going to rush him off to A&E! The last couple of weeks he has been taking big deep breaths every minute or so... I really don t think it s asthma related as he is never wheezy and never really gets sick, even the common cold he gets over pretty quickly! He d be just sitting there watching telly or colouring and he has to take deep breaths literally every minute.... When I asked him about it he said he feels like he has a knot in his chest and needs to take a big deep breath?! Any insight into this would be great Thank you :)

Pediatrician 's  Response
Hi,
This seems to be early sign of asthma but not in the stage of acute severe asthma.Avoid chocolat ,cream, sweets and cool drinks which are triggering factors.Ask him to gargle his throat with warm saline water.Your doctor may ask you to do Pulmonary function test and confirm the diagnosis. Then he will decide about the treatment plan
good luck

Pediatrician Dr. E Venkata Ramana's  Response
Hi,

Thank you for your query on Healthcare Magic.

This type of deep breaths without an underlying respirator problem may be related to

1. Anxiety

2. Stress related

3. Phobias and scary things which caused due to watching TV shows of scary things

4. Boredom and lack of sleep in the night times.

Anxiety and stress related phobias, scary shows and continuous watching television may lead to deep breathing episodes with feeling of chest tightness and knots in the chest.

I advise you to decrease his viewing time of television to less than one hour within 24 hours.

Adequate night time sleep is mandatory to be active on day time.

Consult your Pediatrician on appointment to look for the other causes of rapid breathing like respiratory problems and anemia.

Hope I have answered your query.

Regards.
