7 Year Old With Constipation And Sticky Stools. Any Medication?
I have a 7 year old son who is currently having trouble with soft, sticky poop . He is finding it very hard to go--he will push but not much comes out---sticks to his bum which causes him to push more because he feels that there is still more to come out. He is afraid to have bowel movements because it hurts. He has bowel movements several times in the evening and it can take up to 20 minutes.
Dear JamesMom,
These are classical symptoms of constipation. Passing hard stools results in pain and pain inturn results in avoidance of passing stools leading onto a vicious cycle. It needs to be immediately taken care. Laxatives like lactulose, paraffin, PEG are avaialble and can be obtained after physician's advice. But these are transient relievers, a change in lifestyle i.e taking high fiber diet like fruits, vegetables, water and avoiding oilyfoods, processed fast foods helps in avoiding constipation.
Don't worry. He will be alright. But lifestyle modification is needed. Take care.
