74 Years. Blurred Vision In Both Eyes With New Pair Of Glasses. History Of Aortic Valve Replacement And Aorta Repair. Suggest

My husband (74 years old) had aortic valve replacement on July 1st, as well as some aorta repair. He purchased a new pair of glasses before the surgery, and during his stay in ICU, he experienced blurriness in both eyes. That has been almost a week ago, and it is not getting better. He is very depressed because he is an avid reader.
Is this common?

Hi thanks for your question.
Yes he can have blurred vision after surgery. This not due to surgery but due to the effects of drug used during anaesthesia. Atropine a drug commonly used during anaesthesia can cause blurring of vision postoperatively. This blurring can last for a week. This is more common in old people who have already compromised vision due to cataract. Examination by an ophthalmologist is advisable to rule out cataract as cause of blurred vision, effect of which might have been exaggerated by atropine.
Hope this answers your question.
