8 Month Old Having Gas Problem On Powder Formula. Any Harm In Switching Milk Based Formula To Soy?
My son is 8 months old. He was breastfed until he was 4 months. Since then he has been given enfamil premium infant powder formula...he seems to do fine except gas. I asked my pediatritio. And he wasn t to concerned..said all babies have gas. But my son seems to be in pain and wakes up during naps and bedtime crying in pain. And passing gas when he wakes as if that s the issue. I ve heard its not a good idea to switch from milk based formulas to soy...but im wondering if I could switch him to enfamil prosobee soy...and what harm would that cause.thanks
yes it is a common thing that majority of the babies do have gas building up in the bowel.. its more to do with the infant milk formula is also true to certain extent.. but one thing is breast feeding has to be continued at least till a year and half to two.. that is ideal.. so that along with the breast milk the child can be fed home based soft bland diet.. this would minimize the problems and issues related to the digestion and gas..
coming to your child.. you do not need to switch over to a soy protein based formula cause it contains some particles ex: phytanic acid which combine with essential minerals like calcium , magnesium and other trace elements and prevent their absorption.. there by leading to their deficiencies.. so even though soy protein content may be higher its other side effects makes it not advisable..
for gas troubles after feeding the child you can put the child on shoulder and burp it for around 10- 15 min... also if child is very uncomfortable or has woken up from sleep you can place the child in prone position that is on its abdomen.. this allows the gases to escape upwards and outwards and provides relief to the child.. but do not place the child in this position un attended and not more than 5- 10 min..
ideally switch over to breast feeding and home made soft porridges, mashed vegetables etc..
