Abnormal Hair Growth With Dark Hair From Neck To Buttocks, Cause Of Concern ?
My granddaughter was born with a patch of hair above the buttocks . She is now age 7 and has lots of dark hair (about 6 inches in width) growing from your neck to her buttocks. I am mostly concerned that this may be a symptom of something, as well as concerned about her being teased by her peers. What is the cause of the abnormal hair growth on her back which seems to increase each year of her life?

Hello,
Welcome to Healthcare Magic forum.
A tuft of hair above the bottom when present since birth usually indicates an underlying spinal cord anomalies or other neural tube defects or sometimes kidney abnormalities .However only the excessive growth of hair without an associated defect may be due to an underlying hormonal or metabolic problem.Since she is asymptomatic it is unlikely that any major congenital anomalies are present but nevertheless it does warrant an evaluation.
So please consult a pediatrician for a thorough examination & investigation of your granddaughter to rule out any of the above mentioned problems.
Wishing her good health,
Regards
