Advise If Surgery Is Necessary For A Decreasing Colloid Nodule
I am 33 year old 5'7 135 pound female. I am programmed for a thyroid lobectomy in one month. Have had two biopsies in the past 2 years and both chowed a colloid nodule. Now I was referee to surgery because it was a 2.5 cm nodule that grew to be a 3.0 cm nodule in this past year. Also other concerns are micro calcifications and high vascularity. Also must mention that last month I repeated an ultrasound and showed the nodule was only 2.5 cm again. Should I go on with surgery or should I keep observing it? Your opinion is greatly appreciated. Thanks
Micro calcification and increased vascularity are more favouring surgery. Size less than 4 cm, colloid nodule, not increasing size are more in favour of periodic observation.
The problem with thyroid nodule evaluation are these tests are only 50-60% able to detect a thyroid cancer. So some surgeons are aggressive , some are just watchful. I think based on the information I gave you should make a call on surgery. I personally will observe after 6 months in this case.
Hope I have answered your question. If you have any further questions I will be happy to help.
