All Wisdom Tooth Extracted, Suspected Trigeminal Neuralgia. Can The Gums Be Infected Causing All Pain?
I had all 4 wisdom teeth extracted over 5 weeks ago. Developed dry sockets immediately on the lower two but felt like the upper left had a dry socket too, but he didn't treat it. The surgeon didn't even have consent to remove the left side, which I have been experiencing intense electrifying shocks and constant strong pain and some numbness on the left side only for several weeks now. (My doctor who they finally involved, along with an ER doc and a surgeon) think it sounds like trigeminal neuralgia. Is it possible that the hard protrusion deep back at the upper extraction site in a bone fragment or spur that's infected causing all the pain that's moved forward along my upper gums (left side)?
According to your clinical symptoms i suppose that you have developed a dry socket in your extracted wisdom tooth, it is extremely painful condition ususlly occurs due to dislodgement of the blood clot from the socket. Trigemminal neuralgia is a condition in which pain is present on touching specific trigger points. You need a thorough clinical examination by an Oral Surgeon to rule out the cause. Also the dry socket should be treated with ZnOE dressing to promote healing, you probably have to visit to the Dentist periodically to change the dressing. At home take lukewarm saline and antiseptic mouthwash rinses. Maintain a good oral hygiene.
Welcome to HCM forum. From your history it seems your pain is due to dry socket and open bony fragments of your extracted tooth socket. It is not Trigeminal neuralgia. It has a different symptoms. You should visit your dentist, who can trim the exposed bony margin, which will give you faster relief. About dry socket, no medicine has been proved to heal the infected bony socket faster. It will heal by itself. Zinc oxide and eugenol dressing is an old concept and such dressing with gauze will relieve pain but certainly will delay healing. The most accepted local dressing can be made by combination of 1] one drop of eugenol(Clove oil, available in all pharmacy), 2] one drop size Betadine ointment, 3] one drop size lignocaine 5% ointment. Apply this combination with your finger into your socket every two to three hours. It will reduce your pain, give you a soothing feeling, kills local bacteria. The socket will heal by itself. Do not use any gauze dressing, which will delay healing. Beside this you can use Paracetamol 1 gm for pain as and when required. Hope, this will help you in reducing pain and faster relief.
After reading all your present symptoms I feel your left sided extraction socket has developed dry socket..which is a imflammation of bone lining the socket...
I think you have taken all the antibiotics and analgesic according to prescription....
You can continue warm saline rinses at least 3-4 times/day...
Consult with Dentist and Zinc oxide eugenol dressing is required for that socket...
Trigeminal neuralgia usually developes from a particular trigger point and pain generally lasts for few secs to minutes..I don't think so your pain is related to that...
