Am Suffering From Varicocele. Advised Supportive Underwear. How Long Can I Wait For Surgery?

hi doctors i'm 22 years old, i am suffering from varicocele for more than 3 years until now, my doctor advised me to wear supportive underwear when playing basketball, he also advised me that surgery is NOT necessary at this time, he told me that i can have surgery after marriage if fathering is delay. so my question is can i wait many more years before having surgery? can i wait for another 5 years? thanks! :)

Hi and thank you so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about your battle with varicocele.

Varicocele need just symptomatic treatment unless there is clear evidence tat there is an impact in the ability to father a child. Putting on a supportive underwear as suggested is the main stay of treatment except in severe cases that surgical excision and relieve of symptoms is necessary.

Surgery is not mandatory. You may wait five years of longer or maybe fewer than 5years if something worrisome should arise from them. However, I would like you to know that having surgery for this condition is not a must because of its relatively benign nature. Don't be surprised you spend your entire life never having to be operated upon for this!!

I hope this helps you with your query and addresses it fully.
I wish you well and please do well to come back to us if more questions do arise.
I wish you well.
