Are EGD And Esophagoscopy The Same Procedures?

Is a EGD and a esophagoscopy the same thing? I need the first and the latter is listed as part of my Aflac coverage (for only $100 but hey, every penny counts as I have a high deductible). If they are considered the same thing, then this will determine when I get my EGD, as I would then have to wait till Aug to get the EGD.

EGD is the abbreviation of Esophago-Gastro-Duodenoscopy.

The technique of EGD and esophagoscopy is the same: a flexible endoscope is inserted through your mouth into the esophagus (esophagoscopy), stomach and duodenum (EGD). So it is the same technique, but esophagoscopy is a part of EGD, since it is used to visualize just the esophagus and is rarely done alone.

If you need EGD you shouldn't do just esophagoscopy. The reason your doctor is asking for EGD is that he want to evaluate not just your esophagus, but also your stomach and portions of small intestine.
