Are HIV Test Results Conclusive?

In 2012 I broke up with a guy. In 2013 or 2014 I found out he was hiv positive. I went immediately and got tested, through a blood test. My test results were negative. I am now dealing with thyroid problems and haven't found out if it's hypo or hyperthyroidism. Is there a link between hiv and thyroid issues, and if I tested negative could I still be positive for hiv?? I was told today's test are pretty accurate.

Hi,

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Thyroid problem and HIV are not related and doesn't affect each other's results. You can rule out HIV conclusively after three month of exposure.

I think, as per history, you have investigates after one year. So don't worry about HIV (as almost all the tests reliable for HIV exclusion after one year).

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
