Are Birth Control Pills Adequate To Control Excessive Menstrual Bleeding?

I ve been having heavy periods with large clots the size of half dollars. At my dr appointment he put me on birth control pill. He also did blood work and a vaginal ultrasound. The pap came back fine, blood work fine but ultrasound showed thickened ljning. Still had a heavy period. The next cycle I woke up to a wet bed with a huge clot the size of an apple or larger (not an exaggeration). Left a trail of blood to the bathroom. This continued the next day. I passed huge clots and blood gushing down my legs. Called dr. She told me to take 2 birth control pills for 14 days to stop the bleeding. It has stopped, but still cramping with a clear discharge. My sister, aunt, and cousin have had uterine cancer. Is this the normal procedure to only do bc pills? I feel I need to be seen. Hate to be a whiney patient, but...
