Hi,I am Dr. Subhankar Chakraborty (Gastroenterologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Are Excessive Number Of Spider Veins Indicative Of Liver Cirrhosis?
Hi, I have always had some spider veins / spider angiomas on my face (cheeks) but recently they have increased and there are lots of them. I am a heavy drinker, does this mean I have chirosis of the liver? I also have middle back pain.
Spider angiomas can definitely be one of the signs of cirrhosis, particularly if they have increased. When the liver starts to detoriate, it has difficulty breaking down certain substances and you can get these spider veins and angiomas. If you're a heavy drinker, you are very much at risk for cirrhosis.
I'd recommend seeking treatment to stop drinking, as stopping cold turkey will be dangerous. IF you're serious about quitting, seeking professional help to do so is vital. I really recommend you check into a detox center.
I hope this answers your questions. Please feel free to contact me should you have any further questions.
