Are Excessive Sleepiness And Discomfort In The Toes Side Effects Of Haldol?

My 17 1/2 year old Autistic son was in the ER yesterday and he was given a combination of Haldol (5mg) and Ativan intra-muscular for severe aggression. He has been on Ativan for almost 2 years, but it was the first time he was given Haldol. He slept for almost 18 hours on/off. I was sent home with a 2 mg tablet and I cut it in half this morning, so he got 1mg. He is absolutely not himself! He has been dozing in/out all day. He is moving as if in slow motion. His speech is definitely not the same, also slowed. He is not eating his favorite foods or doing some of his most favorite things like getting on the computer. He also just told me his toes or feet feel unusual. I m extremely worried since I spent all day reading horror stories about long lasting side effects of Haldol. Does this mean he is allergic to it? What should I do?

Hi,

His symptom of sleepiness is most likely from intramuscular Ativan. Even though he has been taking oral Ativan for 2 years, Intramuscular Ativan is in different dosage than his regular oral dose.

ER doctors must have given him a higher equivalent dosage of Intramuscular Ativan as he must have developed tolerance to effects of his oral Ativan. Haldol can cause extrapyramidal side effects but your description does not look like a side effect of Haldol.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
