Are Green Stools Normal After Taking Iron Injections?

Hi I am 18 years old and I found out about 6 months ago that I have severely low iron levels. The last time I checked, I had an iron level of 3. No supplements would work and finally my doctor is giving me injections. I noticed, though, that my stool is green. Is this normal?

Hi,

Iron pills or injections can change the color of your stool to a greenish or greyish black. This is normal.Do not worry. Monitor your Hemoglobin and reticulocyte counts.Since your iron levels are very very low indicating severe anemia, consult with your doctor if blood transfusion is required.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Saranya Ramadoss, General & Family Physician
