Are Kidney Problems Related With Low Hb, Pain In Spine & Hips

My husband (age 40, 5'8", 175 lbs) just found out that he has a low hemoglobin count(7.2) when he tried to donate blood. He went to the doctor and they gave him iron supplements to take and he has to go back in a week or 2 to get another count done. He went to work this morning and had sudden sharp agonizing back pain centralized to the spine area just above his hips. Can it be related? Should he be really concerned, possibly kidney related?
