Are Palatoglossal Arches Removed In Tonsillectomy?

Hello.I am a 43 year old male who has just had tonsils removed for histology by a hospital registar. While I'm extremely fortunate that the results show no sign of malignantsy I am concerned that my palatoglossal arches have also been removed. Is this usual in this type of operation and what are the implications . Thankyou.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

No palatoglossal arches are not removed. We remove the tonsils present in the tonsillar fossa which is bounded by palatoglossal and palatopharyngeal arches. If palatoglossal injury occurs then it causes severe pain and bleeding. No tonsillectomy will touch the arches.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Rajat Basak
