Are Random Single Hiccups Throughout The Day Considered Persistent Hiccups?

Are random single hiccups throughout the day considered persistent hiccups? I saw that persistent hiccups can be a sign of numerous serious health issues so that is why I am concerned. It is only one hiccup at a time and comes at different times throughout the day. Probably about 10-15 times a day but always just a single hiccup. The hiccups are also silent. I have been having them randomly, every day, for the last three weeks. I do have acid reflux & anxiety and have had increased stress lately. So I m not sure if it could be stress related or not. I also took omeprazole for 2 weeks and if I remember correctly, the hiccups started after that. So maybe a side effect of the medication? I am a healthy and active 23 year old female. I basically just want to know if this is likely to be an indication of something serious? Also, if single hiccups every day are considered persistent ?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Don't worry hiccups may be due to sudden or episodic diaphragmatic contractions seen in diaphramatic irritation. Eating too much or too quickly, feeling nervous or excited, drinking carbonated beverages or too much alcohol, stress,a sudden change in temperature, swallowing air while sucking on candy or chewing gum etc. Other possibilities like pneumonia or sub diaphragmatic abscess or hepatitis or splenomegaly or Infections or kidney failure or respiratory failure etc. Until examination is done it is difficult to say what it is. You can use centrally acting muscle relaxant like Baclofen twice a day for five days. If symptoms not improved please consult your physician he will examine and treat you accordingly.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
