Hello. Thank you for your question. Welcome to HCM. I understand your concern.
Mitral valve prolapse (
MVP) can not, per se, produce palpitations. It is a totally benign situation, which has to produce
mitral regurgitation (blood returning from the left ventricle to the left atrium during
systole - when mitral valve is normally shut) in such severity that can eventually produce left atrium enlargement, due to high pressures in this chamber, to eventually produce palpitations. This statement, written in one sentence, may take up to 40 years to happen, from the moment that the MVP is diagnosed.
Sexual intercourse is considered a moderate to vigorous physical activity, depending on performance and duration. In these kinds of activities, the normal thing that happens is that
heart rate goes up (you feel your heart pounding) and blood pressure goes up. These are regular beats that are merely due to physical activity, and happen to anyone, diagnosed with MVP or not. If these are regular beats, then my opinion is that there is nothing to worry about, and continue to live your life and do not withhold sexual intercourse, or physical activity.
I hope I was helpful with my answer.
Best regards,
Dr. Meriton
