Hello Marilyn,
The recent medicine for prevention of atrial
fibrillation is Dofetilide. It is a class III
antiarrhythmic agent, marketed as Tikosyn by Pfizer. It is available in the United States as 125, 250, and 500 µg capsules.
It is used for the maintenance of
sinus rhythm in individuals prone to the formation of atrial fibrillation and flutter, and for the chemical
cardioversion to sinus rhythm from atrial fibrillation and flutter.
Loss of energy and tiredness are not listed as side effects but may produce headache, dizziness and nausea.
Torsades de pointes is its most serious side effect. The incidence of torsades de pointes is dose-related.The risk of inducing torsades de pointes can be decreased by taking precautions when initiating therapy, such as hospitalizing individuals for a minimum of three days for serial creatinine measurement, continuous telemetry monitoring and availability of cardiac
resuscitation.
Since you had two unsuccessful radioablations and the af has to be cardioverted each time, I think Dofetilide is worth s try.
Best wishes,
Dr Noble Zachariah
