Are There Any Correlation Between Migraines And Lesions In Brain?
My daughter just had an MRI this morning. It was found that she has multiple demyelinated lesions on her brain. My daughter is 24 years old. She's has been suffering migraines for the past 4-5 years. From all that I am reading, it points to MS. Is there any correlation between the migraines and these lesions?
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
In chronic migraine patients over the years some changes can be seen in the brain matter. However, these are not demyelinating changes. Migraine doesn't cause demyelinated lesions. They are usually found later on in chronic migraine patients, they are rare at 24. Typically, the two can be distinguished through imaging also by location and distribution of the lesions. So I am afraid that the most likely diagnosis would indeed be MS and the lesions are not due to migraine.
