General & Family Physician 's  Response
Dear Madam, Hi & Welcome.

Based on the history you seem to be suffering from anemia of iron deficiency type for which you were prescribed the supplement Fefol-Z.

Generally the iron supplements like Fefol-Z are safe.

However, it may cause metallic taste, bloating sensation, heartburn, stomach pain, constipation, black stools, nausea and vomiting, etc.

In order to correct the anemia, it has to be taken for a longer period of time.

The response to iron therapy like Fefol-Z is best monitored by checking periodic hemoglobin levels.

The hemoglobin concentration will rise slowly, usually beginning after approximately one to two weeks of treatment, and will rise approximately 2 g/dL over the ensuing three weeks.

The hemoglobin deficit should be reduced by half by approximately one month, and the hemoglobin level should return to normal by six to eight weeks. Thereafter you may have to continue to take the treatment for another six months to have adequate iron stores in the body to prevent the anemia.

Beside this you also need to take certain iron rich diet such as red meat, sea foods, green leafy vegetables, etc.

Hope these answer your queries.
