Are There Any Tests To Check The Proper Development Of A 5 Year Old?

Hi Healthcaremagic, My wife and I have a 5-year old son, and he seems to be doing really well. However, I mentioned a few days ago that we should check to make sure that he s developing properly (his genitals) and my wife seemed really concerned. I explained that my mother had checked my genitals every few months, from when I was really young to around age 12 or 13, to make sure that everything was developing properly. I wanted to know if this was something we should be doing? My wife seemed concerned, and thinks that this is inappropriate. If it is not something we should do, that is perfectly fine. Thanks, James

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Unless your son has a complaint about his genitals or injured them, you need not examine them. His doctor should do that when he/she performs his annual well child examination.

I hope this is of help to you. Please return if we can answer any more questions.
