I just discovered the ripe egg fruit has tiny worms in it. A number of fruit flies were around while the fruit was ripening - I didn t think too much of it. When they came ripe, I put them in the frig to save for my husband for when he got back from camping. Meanwhile, I was eating two each day. When he got home and opened them, he saw tiny crawling worms inside. We opened all 8 we had and all had the worms, not a lot, but a few at least. Meanwhile, I had probably eaten 8 of egg fruit myself before discovering the worms. I guess its time to get glasses - hah! Anyhow, are these safe to eat? We composted the fruit - super bummer - as it has a short season and is my favorite food on earth. Could we have put them in a blender to make an egg fruit smoothie and ingested them or is it not a good idea to eat these little guys? Thanks so much - Aloha nui loa!
