At What Stage Of Cold And Cough Should Mucolite Be Given To A Toddler?
Hello doctor,at what stage of cold / cough should mucolite be given? My 18 month old baby did not have a runny nose or much phlegm when I started mucolite. But after 4 dosrs of 2 ml each morning and night ,she is coughing and has very runny nose. I am confused if and when I can use mucolite drops..please help.
Mucolite drops consist of Ambroxol and it is used to relieve cough associated with bronchospasm (constriction of airways of lungs). It also provides relief from throat irritation, seasonal allergies and nasal congestions in children, thus allowing them to breathe freely. The known side effects of Mucolite in children are nausea, vomiting and fatigue etc.
Definitely, presence of more phlegm may be due to thinning effect of Mucolite on phlegm, and due to easy passage from lungs, this appears more to us. Runny nose or cough are not the usual side effects of Mucolite, rather these may be part of disease process of allergy or cold itself. The use of Mucolite is indicated and beneficial, if there are prominent features of asthma (breathing difficulty). You may need some anti-allergic with or without Mucolite, depending on the symptoms under guidance of your doctor.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
