Avascular Necrosis On Legs. Done Core Decompression Surgery. Done Physiotherapy Exercises. What Can Be Done?
Hi,My father (Age is 63 years Non diabetic)has got AVN on both legs and right leg is having stage-3(Ficat arlet) and left leg is stage-1.Doctors have done Core Decompression surgey for both the legs.How much time it will consume to come to normal walking.He is doing Physiotherapy execersizes as prescribed by Doctor.Please answer.

Hi, thanks for writing to HCM. Theoritically speaking, Core decompression is indicated for stage 1 or 2 cases. It will not yield good results in stage 3 cases. There are different surgical management options for different stages of AVN with variable outcomes after surgery. Also the surgeries are technically demanding (rotational osteotomies, muscle pedicle bone graft , vascularised fibular graft etc). So there is nothing much one can do but to keep watching the progression of the disease process. The definitive management for stage 4 is TOTAL HIP REPLACEMENT and yields excellent results.
