Baby Gagging Without Food In Mouth. Maybe Working Out Muscles. Normal?
My 2 week old daughter gags without any food or anything in her mouth. I assumed it is just working her muscles, but I m not sure. There doesn t seem to be a pattern when this happens, it even happens in her sleep. She isn t spitting anything up and I ve even checked to make sure nothing was in her mouth. Is this normal?
Hi Mrs.Davidson,
Thank you for choosing healthcaremagic.com to post your queries and giving us this opportunity to clarify your doubts.
Well, babies can have weird habits and styles that you and me cannot think of. Most of them may be just a normal process and worth ignoring, but some have to be addressed promptly. To know this difference, you should check what harm it is causing to your baby, in terms of feeding, weight gain and development. Is this gagging, causing interruption in your baby's feeding? Is it making her lose her weight? Has her frequency of urination reduced? And also as you rightly checked, whether there is anything in her mouth that is making her gag,For eg, a neonatal tooth, falling back tongue, etc. If the answers to the questions above are all a negative, then there is hardly anything to worry about. In any case of doubts and persistence of this habit, I would recommend you to see your neonatologist once.
I hope I have helped you clarify your doubts and allay your anxiety. Take care and stay healthy.
