Hi,I am Dr. Alexander H. Sheppe (Psychiatrist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Bi-polar, Prescribed Dicorate, Sizidon Forte. Improved Appetite, Concentration Levels. Any Lab Test Required?
My son is bi-polar and is prescribed Dicorate 1gm + Sizidon Forte at night before sleeping. He has responded well to the medication (since the past 2 weeks). He exhibits an increased appetite, some hair loss, but the medication has helped get his over his episode and he has resumed school. He is very sleepy but his concentration levels have improved.Should i have any lab tests (like a liver function test or any other tests; and when do i need to do these tests?) done to serve as a health monitor?Of course i will keep his medication going for a long term as the doctors have prescribed. He has inherited the BPAD from me.I had an episode 29 years and 25 years ago ( though it was not diagonized then; only recently whenn providing my son's family history did the doctor state that I too was a bi-polar ( in remission).I discontinued medicines about 3 months after the episode, which was thenn diagonized as a nervous breakdown.
hi! increase in appetite and weight can be the the side effect of both of dicorate and sizodon forte. As per the guidelines and my experience, liver function test and full blood count is to be done at the initiation of treatment with valproate and after 6 months. please do serum lipids also at 6 months interval indicated for both dicorate and sizodon forte. hope this helps you.
It is nice to know that your son has responded well to treatment. Of the medicines he is currently on, only the Dicorate has to be continued long term. Your doctor will gradually reduce and stop Sizodon forte in a few months and you will see an improvement in the sedation and increased appetite when that is done.
When a person is on valproate (Dicorate), liver function tests must be done at least twice a year or more if required. In addition, the serum level of valproate should be measured to ensure that it is in the therapeutic range. If not, the dosage needs to be adjusted so that side effects can avoided while retaining efficacy.
Hope this helps you. Best wishes.
