Birth Asphyxia. Requested CPK, Abnormal. What Can We Expect?
HI, I AM A DOCTOR GETTING MY TRAINING IN PAEDIATRICS. I HAVE A PATIENT ADMITTED IN MY NURSERY WITH BIRTH ASPHYXIA. HE IS UNABLE TO CLOSE HIS MOUTH(showing degree of hypotonia). i requested his CPK levels. The levels at 72 hrs of life are 178 and CK-MB 76. kindly guide me how to proceed. and are these levels significant? There is history of sib deaths in family with no issue alive and 1 died at 3 months of age with no known cause. kindly help me in management. thanx.
Hi, Cpk of 178 is not high for asphyxia. However ck mb should be less than 2% of total cpk to be normal. If high it indicates cardiac affection from asphyxia. For SIB death you have to do compete metabolic workup ,ammonia, blood gas, blood amino acid profile, carnitine, etc. Good luck Dr Uma
