Broke The Metacarpal. Had Surgery. Need To Remove The Plates?
I broke my 5th metacarpal around December 27th 2011 I went to see a doctor after it had healed in the position that it broke. On March 29th 2012 the doctor cut the broken healed bone and put it back where it should be with a plate and six screws. I am wondering if I have the plate removered would those holes fill in with new bone and would that be better or is it better to leave the plate and screws there and not remove them? Thank You Very Much for your time.
Hello, If you are having no problem with the plates and have titanium plates then there is no need to worry. The bone healing is primary concern. In case the bone has healed well and the plates are made of steel (not MRI compatible) then a second opinion regarding removal of plates after bone healing would help. Your daily physical activities and weight bearing must also be kept in mind.
