Bruise On Left Side Of Ribs, Pain In Lower Back, Swollen Belly. Relief With Wrapping The Ribs With Bandage. History Of Injury While Playing. Possible Spleen Damage?
My son injured himself playing rugby. A boy fell on him causing bruising to the left side of his ribs. He now has pain in his lower back and his belly is definitely more swollen and larger than usual. I thought this was down to the lack of exercise he'd recently had because of a couple of other injuries that kept him out of sport, but now I'm worrying about possible spleen damamge? Would this cause swelling of the belly?
Also, he reports being more comfortable when I wrap his ribs with a bandage. Is this ok to do? It gives him relief from tht epain and allows him to move more freely.
Hello, Thanks for writing in. Coming to the specific question on spleen damage, spleen is an organ located in the left upper abdomen above the left kidney. Significant splenic injury causes severe bleeding and patient deteriorates. A simple way to know if slpeen is damaged is to get an ultrasound scan of abdomen. Any other cause of the suspected belly swelling if present, will also be detected.
Hope this helps.
