Bulging Vein Below Thumb Joint And Above Wrist, Burning Pain. Feels Better Applying Ice. What Should Be Done?

Been wearing thumb splints off & on. (I'm 50.) Played piano in church a total of an hr. today. This afternoon the vein below my left thumb joint & above my wrist was bulging. It's green & burning some. Put ice on it & elevated it. Feels better while ice is on it & I keep it up. What is it? What should I do? Thanks!

Hi,
As you described, swollen vein with pain calmed by ice, this suggest some trauma to the thumb joint leading to inflammation. It could be as a result of multiple minor trauma to the joint as a result of playing guitar and wearing a splint. Normally such inflammation subsides without much action. However, if still much pain you can get OTC anti inflammatory for a short duration (3days). Also consider protecting you thumb when playing guitar. For example, wearing glove. Equally verify the way you hold the instrument to make sure it is the right way.
Wish you good health

Hi, Thanks for using HCM.

Since you are wearing thumb splint for long time and had played piano today. Swelling and pain may be due to tendon or ligament injury and this might have hurted your blood vessel. The green colour is due to blood. For healing take complete rest, dont move the joint, use splint, tab. Aceclofenac with serratiopeptidase and consult your orthopedician for examination and management. You may need to get done radiological examination for the diagnosis.
Hope I answered your question. Feel free to ask me if you have any further queries. Wish you good health. Take care.

Regards
Dr. Lohit
